We know that there’s been a lot of flooding on LI starting with Sandy.   We also know that there’s been flooding up and down the eastern seaboard since Sandy.  We also have a lot of data showing that the breach at The Old Inlet is not contributing in any measurable way to flooding.  Nonetheless, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone is today calling for The Army Corps of Engineers to close the breach.   In doing this, Mr. Bellone is preying on fear and ignorance, wasting tax payer dollars, and in the end doing nothing  to address the real flooding problems on the bay.   This continued mismanagement of The Great South Bay must stop.   Science should be guiding our environmental decisions, not politics.   If Sandy taught us anything, its that our weather has been altered, maybe permanently.  Closing one small breach is not going to change that

Bellone, Horsley, Calarco and Pontieri are making an announcement tomorrow at 12:45pm at Shorefront Park in Patchogue, calling for the Inlet to be closed. Let them know you oppose this unnecessary waste of millions of dollars which will have no effect on flood mitigation and will be detrimental to the health of our bays. Email or call them, and consider showing up at Shorefront Park tomorrow and politely voicing your opposition.
