Hello everyone! I hope you are able attend our inaugural event in our Speaker’s Series, a breakfast conference on “Emerging Contaminants, Methoprene And Our Marshes” at The View in Oakdale, Friday, July 26th, 8AM-10AM.
The Lessing Hospitality Group is our Host Sponsor.
The event is free and includes a continental breakfast. We have limited the audience to 50 attendees!
Kevin McAllister of DefendH2O will trace the connections between mosquito spraying and marsh degradation, continuing in his decade long quest to see Methoprene spraying banned as a means of mosquito control. It kills a lot more than mosquitos, including the dragonflies that eat the mosquitos.
Speaking on the issue of Emerging Contaminants will be Michael Beckerich, CEO of York Analytical Laboratories. They are making the investments necessary to detect 1, 4 -Dioxane, a chemical used in the production of myriad household products that toxic at parts per billion, and PFAS/PFOAs, flame retardants that are toxic in parts per trillion.
Save The Great South Bay will be shooting another 5-8 new episodes of Water Matters, ones that will address important topics we’ve yet to cover or are new to us — such as Emerging Contaminants and West Brook. We will definitely have a show about Going Native and Invasives, and another on Methoprene. Perhaps a show on the plan to build storm gates as a response to sea level rise. If you have a topic you’d like for us to cover, let us know.
In the past months, we’ve seen a lot of demand for public forums so that we collectively could become better informed about the issues we are facing. As an organization, Save The Great South Bay is committed to seeking solutions to the environmental problems we face with the bay and on The South Shore generally. The challenge is enormous; it will take all of us.
Hope to see you on the 26th!
