Creek Defender Day Sayville 2019

On Saturday, May 18th, some of Sayville’s devoted members of Save the Great South Bay are meeting at Astor Drive and Aldrich Street to clean Mill Pond. Click Here to Volunteer

Our efforts are part of Save The Great South Bay’s Creek Defender Program.  The premise is that by cleaning one of Sayville’s three creeks, we clean The Great South Bay.  Last year the Greater Sayville Civic cleaned Greenes Creek.  This year Save the Great South Bay is leading the Mill Pond clean-up.

It is apparent that the bright green growth in the pictures is an unnatural hue of green that does not match the other vegetation. Anyone who has spent a lifetime driving by Mill Pond knows we have a problem.  We sampled the waters of Mill Pond during our scouting.  We will share our findings in the future.

Here’s how the pond looked last summer, and will look like every summer until we improve water quality:

Let me take a moment to update you on related, local environmental efforts. The second dimension of Save the Great South Bay’s Creek Defender is to plant native plants and grasses.  Such natives filter out contaminants before they leech into local waters where they flow into and pollute the Great South Bay.  The Greater Sayville Civic secured New York State DEC native plants that will be planted near Greenes Creek for this purpose.
Feel free to email me at [email protected] with questions.  You are also welcome to contact me at (516) 987-6453 if that’s more convenient.
Thank you,
