Town of Islip Local Waterfront Revitalization Program Public Engagement Meeting

February 24, 2015 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Free

Attention all those who live in Sayville, West Sayville, or Bayport:

You have earned an opportunity to begin to repair / restore / revitalize your coastline.   You have been awarded an LWRP aka The Town of Islip Local Waterfront Revitalization Program by Albany.   What does this mean?   It means that we have for us an advocate who will listen to local residents’ and non-profit’s suggestions for projects that would yield local environmental improvements.

Can you make it to the first “Public Engagement Meeting for the Coastal Areas of Bayport, Sayville, and West Sayville” on Tuesday, February 24th, 2015, from 7-9 PM at The Sayville Library (88 Greene Avenue, Sayville)?

If not, take their online survey.    You will find it will really help sort out your priorities.   What is most important to you?  Is it bringing back shell fishing?  Improving shoreline access?   Restaurants?   Marsh restoration?   How much is flooding an issue for you?  How do we revitalize our bit of coast on The Great South Bay?  How important is habitat restoration to you, or water quality?

In the end, the important thing is that we as a community engage with the LWRP so that we can together plan a better future.  Our LWRP will be our advocate in Albany for the plans they deem have the greatest merit. So let’s figure out what they would be.  Who would know better than the locals?

Here is a map which our LWRP has jurisdiction over:

Having met with the people who created the LWRP for our three villages, I can see why they were selected.   They are architects and civil … make that civic engineers and committed environmentalists who know how nature and development can be brought into harmony, as a mutual benefit.

It is imperative that we (STGSB) work closely with them, actively offering our best advice as to how we should fix our local environments.  Where can we in these three villages in Islip find ways to improve the environmental health of our waters?   It is Save The Great South Bay’s great hope that our engagement with this LWRP can evolve into a road map for healing our bay.  What we end up doing in Sayville, West Sayville, and Bayport, may be repeated elsewhere, but only if we are actively engaged in the effort to fix our shorelines.
