On Saturday, October 17th, as part of the 35th Annual International Coastal Clean Up movement, Save the Great South Bay (STGSB) and Keep Islip Clean (KIC), two local environmental groups, teamed up with community members, including many Bay Shore High school volunteers, to clean up along the Penataquit Creek south of Union Blvd.

As part of the program, volunteers cleared debris from the creek beds and kept records of what was found for the Ocean Conservancy records. Power-tools, tires, shopping carts and plastic bottles were just some of the items pulled out of the creek. Save The Great South Bay regularly conducts community creek clean ups along the 50 or so creeks and rivers that flow into the Great South Bay.
