Here’s a note that at first made me sad, then angry, then determined:

What if anything can be done to bring more environmental awareness to the boating community regarding the use of harsh, environmentally unfriendly chemicals used to clean boats? At the local marina where my boat is docked I have witnessed many people using very harsh household products to clean their boats. Products like Tilex, straight up bleach, etc, etc, etc. These chemicals are washed off directly into the water. It is very frustrating to watch. I’ve told some folks that they should use environmentally safe products or simply water and a good stiff brush like I do, but they don’t seem to be impressed and I usually get laughed at. Something needs to be done. My humble little skiff and I can set an example, but can’t compete with ignorance and arrogance that I’ve encountered. It seems like a losing battle.
Thing is, I knew what he was saying was all too true. There are boaters, and even marinas that tolerate things like this:

I always want to begin with the assumption that when people start to realize the consequences of their actions, they generally modify their behaviors. If they understand, for instance, that chemical fertilizers and pesticides poison our waters and our drinking waters, they’d choose a ‘bay friendly yard,’ and help reintroduce native habitat block by block. But hearing this man’s story, and seeing what I am seeing, its clear we together, all of us, are going to have to establish some basic code of conduct if we are to get our bay back.
I asked the gentleman whether he’d alerted his marina. Here is his response:
Whelp, I can and will speak to the people who run the marina where my boat is docked. Being a respectable private marina, they are very receptive to customer concerns, but as you can imagine the problem is far more widespread. I’ve had experience on both the north and south shore with both town owned and privately owned marinas and as far as I know there are no regulations or rules other than proper fueling methods and black water pumping. Grey water on the other hand is not regulated at all. At least to my knowledge. The “grey area” of grey water, including cleaning chemicals being washed directly into the water should be looked into. I would think if the town marinas were put on the spot about regarding grey water the private marinas would follow.
However we can change people’s behaviors, have them become better stewards of the bay, where they boat and where they fish, we are for. How many hundred businesses — marinas, restaurants and bars, shellfishing operations, tourism, the ferries — ring the bay? How can they all help to have people respect the bay that is their livelihood? How can we all play a part in the bay’s revitalization?
In the coming weeks, Save The Great South Bay, working with marinas and environmentalists, will draft a “Green Marinas” sign at whatever marina or local business wishes to participate. Save The Great South Bay wishes to act as the voice for all those businesses dependent on the bay. Together, we need to collectively work on a plan for the bay’s future. Here you all are, and least 200 of you, arranged more or less geographically. Let’s work to be kinder to the bay while we organize to demand action. We are in this together.
